Year 7 & 8 Summer Cricket Tournament. Two good days of cricket, favourable weather, although a little cold and windy on the first day. Pleasingly, the boys were fantastic ambassadors of South. In each match there had to be a player who could not bowl or bat and the boys managed this with fairness and without complaint. They celebrated each other and were positive in defeat and humble in their wins.

Over the two days of cricket we recorded three wins and a loss. The boys fielded exceptionally well taking 19 catches, creating 4 run outs and 2 stumpings. Noah took 4 catches, Eli and Finley took 2 catches a piece, Jonty a stumping off Benji, and George took 3 catches, created 2 run outs, and also made a good stumping off Benji. Overall we used four keepers George, Jonty, Finley and James who all proved to be very adept with the gloves behind the stumps.

Game 1 a win against St Thomas.

St Thomas batted first scoring 85 for 6 (we took 10 wickets in total including the grace period wickets). The pick of the bowlers were Joe 3-4 off 2 overs, Benji 2-3 off 3 and Felix 2-1 off 2.  In response we passed St Thomas total in the 11th over. Pick of the batsmen Reuben 35(off 25 balls) retired , George 21(12) not out and Noah 20(13).

Game 2 a loss against Medbury.

We batted first scoring 147 for 6 (10 outs total). Pick of the batsmen Reuben 28(24), Noah 31(25) retired, Eli 20(20) and Benji 17(12). In response Medbury passed our total in the 19th over, 149/5. Pick of the bowlers were Jonty 2-10 off 2 and George 1-9 off 2. A close game that could have gone either way and a much improved fielding strategy to that of game one was pleasing.

Game 3 a win against Heaton.

Batting first the boys choose to reverse the batting order and make sure everyone gets a fair chance at spending time in the middle. Reuben graciously opted to be the 10th batter. We batted first posting 133 for 6. Pick of the batters George 32(16), Joe and James both 22 retired and Finley 15(16) opening the bat. In reply Heaton batted through to 109/8 (12 wickets in total). Pick of the bowlers, George 2-11 off 3, Joe 2-11 off 2 and Eli 2-20 off 2.

Game 4 a win against Cobham who had just finished a tied match with the Medbury team we lost to yesterday.

Batting first Cobham made 122/6 (13 wickets in total). Pick of the bowlers, James 3-7 off 2, Felix 2-11 off 2, Benji 2-15 off 3 and Eli 2-15 off 2. In reply we passed Cobham’s total in the 12th over for the loss of one wicket for a comfortable win. Pick of the batters Noah 26(16), Reuben 26(26) retired and Jonty 26(27) retired who both opened the bat.

It was great to see all the boys feature and have their moments over the four matches. I would also like to thank Nick (Mr McBrearty) who did a lot of the leg work behind the scenes and is Souths number one cricket aficionado.
