On Wednesday, March 29th, six students from our social awareness leadership group got to take part in the World Vision conference held at La Vida Conference Centre in Riccarton. A variety of students from different schools participated, and learnt about many things related to the World Vision mission and youth leadership in general.
Throughout the day we participated in activities and learnt lots about World Vision. We did the great peg hunt which demonstrated how some people, through no fault of their own, have less resources than others and what we can do about it. We watched many videos and talked about climate change and the Solomon islands, which is the focus for World Vision this year. We then watched our host for the day, Jade interview Stacey Waaka, an olympic gold-decorated New Zealand rugby player . They discussed life lessons and leadership qualities.
Later on we learned more about climate change, youth ambassadors of World Vision, and the troubling reality of modern slavery. We then focused on our upcoming 40 hour challenge campaign. Our team was asked to develop a two-minute pitch to get people involved. We presented our ideas to another school to get us thinking about how we will attract sponsors.
Overall, we had an amazing opportunity to represent CSKI at the conference. We had great conversations with the youth ambassadors and we learnt so much about the Solomon Islands and other opportunities to make a difference. It was a great experience, and we would totally do it again.
