Led by Aniwa and Nadine, with support from our Whānau Rōpu, we welcomed our Māori community once again for our third Whānau Hui. Thank you to all those who were able to join us as we explored the theme of Harvesting, linking on from our exploration of Matariki.
During our Tuesday Akoranga Māori Extension classes, our students learnt how to harvest Harakeke from some of the plants around our kura- school. We learnt about some of the times we don’t harvest- in the rain, in the dark, when the flowers are in bloom- and what parts of the plant we harvest from. Once inside, we had a go at using the tūpuna we had gathered to weave putiputi- flowers. Although a challenging activity, many students felt empowered to be supports for our Whānau Hui the following day.
Not only was this Whānau Hui a chance to share kai and kōrero, but we were lucky to draw on the knowledge of Nadine as she shared the story of weaving in her whānau. She talked the group through the way weaving a putiputi can reflect our journey in life. It is not always linear and we will encounter difficult twists and turns, but when we are able to look back, we can see how our experiences have shaped their own beautiful putiputi.
