Christchurch South held a Walk and Wheel Week in Week 2 this term to support the initiatives of the Christchurch City Council (CCC). This is a fun and free event to encourage students to build healthier, more active communities and reduce emissions, one step or two wheels at a time!
Each morning, members of the Health and Environment Team were friendly faces at the school gate, offering special green Flying High tickets to students who were walking or wheeling. It was pleasing to see many of our students showing our school value of Integrity if they did not walk to school that day! We then held a special prize draw at our Assembly for some swag sent to us by the CCC and The Warehouse!
The Health and Environment team also hosted a colouring in competition which gave students the choice to colour in a pair of silly socks or a bike helmet. It was hard to decide on the winners with so many colourful and creative entries.
Each day, members of the team visited classrooms and did a tally of walkers and wheelers to see which pod would take home the Walk and Wheel trophy for 2025. This years winners were Ngata pod! The week was capped off with a Silly Sock Day where students and staff wore non-uniform socks as a celebration of the great efforts to walk or wheel.
We encourage everyone to walk or wheel to school when possible, remembering to be safe on the roads when travelling, which was our Term 2 focus!
