What an unforgettable evening! We are bursting with pride following our school choir’s incredible participation in the Christchurch Schools’ Music Festival at the magnificent Town Hall last night, Wednesday, November 5th.
For many of our students, singing on that iconic stage, alongside thousands of other young voices, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The sheer scale and beauty of the venue, combined with the powerful sound of the massed choir, created a truly magical atmosphere.
Festival Highlights: Stellar Performances and Tributes
While every performance was special, the evening included several stand-out moments that made us especially proud and added to the grandeur of the event:
- An Inspiring Look Back: One of the most moving parts of the evening was a series of alumni videos that gave us powerful insight into how the festival has influenced lives and encouraged generations of musicians. We were especially inspired by a 96-year-old former participant who vividly recalled her very first festival experience in 1939, conducted by the founder, George Martin. Hearing her speak about the profound impact that day had on her was truly inspirational, demonstrating the festival’s incredible and enduring legacy in our community.
- A Four-Year Commitment: We celebrate Chloe Kamali‘s dedication as a member of the Senior Representative Choir. Chloe received a well-deserved four-year service medal! This incredible achievement highlights her passion and consistent commitment to choral music throughout her intermediate and high school years. Congratulations, Chloe!
- The King of Instruments: A huge highlight was hearing the majestic Town Hall organ played by our very own Mr. Grant Bartly (who also conducts our orchestra!). Mr. Bartly accompanied several pieces throughout the evening and gave a spectacular final performance, filling the hall with rich, resounding music. What an incredible talent to have guiding our students!
- A Moving Dedication: The evening featured a beautiful and poignant performance by the Alumni Choir. They sang the touching piece, “Crowded Table,” which was dedicated to the late Dr. Andrew Withington, a treasured figure and conductor who contributed so much to the festival over many years. It was a heartfelt tribute that resonated deeply.
- Orchestral Brilliance: We were also captivated by the fantastic orchestra, conducted by the brilliant Tony Ryan. They tackled three exceptionally challenging pieces, ranging from the emotional complexity of Tchaikovsky to the modernist drive of Stravinsky. Their performance was truly world-class.
The Heart of Our Choir
The dedication of all our students has been outstanding. They have spent countless hours perfecting the festival repertoire, mastering harmonies, and ensuring they knew every cue. All that hard work, the early morning rehearsals, and the afternoon practices, culminated in a spectacular performance.
Watching them stand together, dressed smartly, and contributing to that enormous, beautiful sound was genuinely moving. They demonstrated exceptional focus, professionalism, and commitment—true examples of our school values.
