On Friday the 16th of May, 524 students showed up in pink. That’s because that day was Pink Shirt Day. In 2007, a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school in Canada. Two other kids saw and decided to do something about it, they went and got pink shirts to wear to school the next day. Word got around and all the kids at that school and others showed up in pink. It has since been globally recognised, and New Zealand joined in the year 2009.
It is a way to show support to many students who are being bullied. This year, Christchurch South Karamata recognised this day by hosting a pink-themed non-uniform day and having a photo booth for students to take photos in their pink outfits with their friends. As a school, we raised $546.50! This will go to the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand and towards funding anti-bullying initiatives and programs. Across the school, classes also learnt about the difference between an upstander vs a bystander and the importance of choosing kindness.
