Matariki at CSKI

Mānawa maiea te putanga o Matariki , Mānawa maiea te ariki o te rangi, Mānawa maiea te Mātahi o te tau

Celebrate the rising of Matariki, Celebrate the rising of the lord of the sky, Celebrate the rising of the New Year.

At CSKI we had an eventful Matariki with support from ākonga, kaiako and whānau. Here is what went on:

Matariki Challenge: In the akomanga, ākonga will have been working on Matariki displays for their learning spaces while also learning about Matariki.  The Matariki challenge has been engaging for a lot of our ākonga. This is open until the end of Week 1 in Term 3. Check out the awesome activities such as making kai and going to explore the city for the local Matariki displays.

Whānau Kapa Haka session: We had an awesome turnout of whānau coming to our Kapa Haka session. It was great to see o many whānau engaged in the lessons from Matua Steve. Especially the poi which for some was new and for others, it was about muscle memory.

Student Hui: On Thursday we met with our Māori students to discuss the next steps moving forward for our Māori Strategic goals. One of our goals is embracing more te reo Māori around our school and I was impressed with the students having great sensible and achievable plans with this. The students shared their experiences from previous schools and what they would like to see.

Hangi: At the end of the hui and to celebrate Matariki the school had put on a hangi for the students. Whānau and kaiako had donated kai and koha to make this event happen. I appreciate the support from the whānau who donated and gave up some time to prep the hangi and the whānau who came to support the hui. Thank you to Aniwa (our Māori BOT rep) who supported me in leading the organisation of the Hangi. Unfortunately, the hangi cooker did not cook the food successfully due to reasons out of our control and we had to cancel. We know that whānau and tamariki were disappointed, but it was great to still gather together in our hui.
