The Ultimate Frisbee team, a team cobbled together from remnants of last year’s summer sport teams and some fresh faces new to the sport, took to the Koru games with a positive attitude and reasonable expectations: have fun, be competitive, and be a good sport.
Our first day saw the team earning early success as our players started to establish their different roles on the field. On day two, we resumed our strong play despite the menace of the northwest winds. The team finished the day at the top of our pool with an overall 5-0 record. Now we would play across pools and the competition looked formidable. South took on Cashmere Primary and demonstrated excellent passing skills and the ability to find open space. The team won decisively and headed to the semi-finals.
Lincoln Primary had tall, strong and aggressive players with great chemistry and defensive awareness. It was our toughest match and a close final score: we edged out opponents 4-2. It was on to the finals and South Brighton presented a very skillful team for us to face. With a forceful cross wind blowing, the match demanded strategy and discipline. South’s handlers threw upwind to complete several critical mid-field catches. Short, sharp passes in the offensive zone converted into points and by the end of the match CSKI was the victor by a score of 7-1.
We are very proud of how this team came together, found their strengths, played their roles, communicated on the field, celebrated each other’s successes and supported each other when mistakes were made.
