Coming together as a community for the Kahukura Music Festival is always a highlight of the school calendar and it was heartwarming to see and hear the tamariki in our kura stepping up to lead the way with mana and pride over the two nights of the festival.
Massive congratulations to the Jazz Band, instrumentalists who accompanied some of the massed items, those in the chorale and of course our 86 strong choir. Your professionalism and heart lifted our spirits as we tripped through the decades, singing nostalgic songs and songs that sent the wairua soaring.
A pinnacle of our evening was when our choir rolled over the seas with “Six Months in a Leaky Boat” and then shot into space, pursuing Major Tom in Space Oddity. Special mention needs to go to Ada Thomson for her expertise playing the violin along side our choir in “Six Months” This was a real highlight, especially when combined with the ethereal drama expertly drifting across the audience in four part harmony at the end of the song. When the count down started in Space Oddity, it felt like Mr. David Bowie himself was in the room, watching from his Black Star and supporting our singers to do their best.
I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all our students involved. Your drive, commitment, passion and aroha for the arts fills us with joy.
I’m still buzzing – exhausted, but buzzing and already excited about the potential for next year.
