The morning of Tuesday, March 31st, may have been chilly and overcast, but the atmosphere on the courts was electric as we held our annual Haka Off. This competition is a powerful display of our school spirit, bringing students together to perform Te Haka o te Kura Karamata—a taonga gifted to us by Mātua Steve in 2014.
More than just a performance, the haka is a living expression of our te ao Māori values:

Our guest judges from Cashmere High School—Matua Clayton and senior students AJ and Zoe—were incredibly impressed. They noted that because every student had mastered the kupu (words) and actions, the competition came down to the “finer details” of tempo, intensity, and eye contact.
While the judges deliberated, the entire school joined forces for a massive combined haka. Led by our four kaia, this moment of shared passion perfectly highlighted the strength of our kura when we unite as one.
A huge congratulations to Rutherford Pod! For the first time ever, they claimed the top spot with a performance defined by mana, precision and a consistent pace. Well done to all our students, staff, and community for making this year’s Haka Off an unforgettable success.
