Native Planting QEII Eco Action 2024 THANK YOU.
What a beautiful day it was on Sunday, and what a great planting! ~400 attendees, and ~5000 plants in the ground. Thanks to everyone who attended. The plants we didn’t get to will be taken care of by STAC, SBHS and Corrections. Thanks to them for their great work, too.
The plants were almost entirely wetland grasses to suit the almost perpetually wet conditions and clay soils. Carex secta, giant rush, and giant umbrella sedge predominated. This will make for great habitat, differentiated from our other plantings, which will lean towards dense woody forest habitat.
Thus ends our plantings for the year! Over four plantings, we all put ~24,000 plants into the Red Zone. Another slice of exotic pasture grass put on a path toward its natural state. What is more important than that, however, are the thousands of hours spent by students getting practical experience in growing, understanding, and caring for native plants. These skills will be vital in the coming decades. Even beyond the 24,000 plants we’re able to plant ourselves, we also produced an additional 36,000 that are being distributed to other planting groups around the Canterbury area.
Of course, the work doesn’t end there! Next year’s plants are being germinated as we speak. N2 have been busy preparing 1,000 plants for planting in 2025 – such an amazing effort!
