The CSKI Football teams had an outstanding performance at the recent Koru Games. Both the boys and girls teams showcased their skills and determination, bringing home impressive results.
Both the girls and boys teams dominated in pool play. They were both undefeated with an impressive 57 goals scored between them and only one conceded across twelve matches.
The Boys’ team contested a hard-fought semi-final against Mount Aspiring College. The teams after regulation time were scoreless, and the match went into a penalty shootout. Unfortunately, CSKI lost in the penalty shoot-out. The Boys’ team placed a credible 4th place out of 27 schools. A huge thanks to Craig Primmer for managing the team during this competition.
The Girls’ team continued their dominant form into their semi-final, winning 4-0 against Queenspack School. They then played a hotly contested and dramatic final against Balmacewen Intermediate School. Both teams had their chances to win but were unable to score a vital goal. In the final minute, Balmacewen were awarded a penalty kick, which they slotted in for a goal. Dramatically, the CSKI girls, from the kickoff, managed to cross into the penalty box, where the ball pinballed around the box until one of their girls scored with the last kick of the game.
The match then moved to a penalty shoot-out. The pressure rose for all of the girls as a large crowd had gathered for the post-game prize-giving. The teams remained deadlocked across sixteen penalties. Finally, the goalkeepers were required to take a penalty. Maia Law, our awesome goalie, slotted home her penalty into the top right-hand corner and then followed up with a great save. This handed the title to CSKI.
