Monday:
This year 94 students participated in our biannual trip to Nelson: we had a safe and very scenic journey up the West Coast, with a number of stops to stretch our legs, including eating lunch on the stoney Kiakoura beach. As soon as we stepped off the bus in Nelson we were greeted with a mihi whakatau and our students then met and left with their billets.
Tuesday:
Sunny Nelson lived up to its name and we had a fantastic day participating in activities around the school, competing in team math and travelling to Tahunanui Recreational Reserve, due to original venue Rabbit Island being waterlogged, where we participated in a number of outdoor games.
Wednesday:
The day kicked off with Broadgreen presenting their Showcase: The main highlight was the performance of their very talented Kapa Haka group who captivated the audience. After the interval we kicked off the sports competition with both schools presenting their haka on the field. We then started with the first of our three trophy sports, the competitive netball. It was a very close game with CSKI eventually winning 15-12. We also competed in touch, rippa and volleyball, with mixed results. After lunch we participated in basketball, ki-o-rahi and tchoukball. Everyone that competed gave it their all which was great to see.
Thursday:
We again woke up to beautiful Nelson weather. We started with an assembly where CSKI presented their Showcase. It was entertaining, varied and full of energy. There were some memorable performances by our Kapa Haka, Pacifika, Choir and Dance groups. There were also a number of outstanding band and individual performances, along with a first, a spoken poem. CSKI did themselves proud. After interval we competed in the final sporting fixtures: competitive, football, basketball, hockey and social tchouball. The hockey team travelled to Saxton Field where they had an impressive 7-2 win. The boys basketball lost by a 15 point margin where the boys football were competitive but were outclassed by Broadgreen. The final two games were our other trophy sports, the girls football and basketball. The atmosphere was buzzing, with a crowd watching at both venues. The girls basketball won 44-28 and the girls football won 5-0 which meant we retained the Sports Challenge Trophy – well done CSKI! In the afternoon we all went to the local pool where the kids could relax and have a bit of down time. The day finished with a very entertaining disco with the kids dressed up in neon. What a jam packed, fun-filled day.
Friday:
We all meet at Broadgreen for the final assembly ready to watch theatre sports. Both teams played well, with Broadgreen taking the final game which meant they won the event. After the farewells and some tears we jumped on the bus and headed back to Christchurch through the inland route, arriving at 6pm. It was a fantastic trip and there will be a lot of great memories for all that experienced it.
