Kelly Mellor, a year 7 student in Sheppard 4 recently attended the AIMs games in Tauranga for BMX. According to Kelly, the city of Tauranga was “very loud, and very busy”. Kelly explains that the trip was all business and she didn’t really do much except for race, practice and check out the new BMX track. Her efforts clearly paid off in the time trials, with her finishing in 4th position overall.
From there, Kelly shifted gears into a team’s race, which entailed her and 1 other BMX rider from around the country racing together. Kelly and her riding partner were put together randomly, so didn’t have much time to practice and get to know each other. Despite this, Kelly and her partner made the semi-finals.
Finally, Kelly raced in the final for her age group. The sky was drizzling but managed to hold off the rain until after the race. While racing, another competitor fell off their bike, which made Kelly even more nervous than she was before. Kelly took home a 4th place medal out of the 7 competitors which she was felt happy about.
