On the 7th of September, I had the absolute privilege to be the master of ceremonies at the opening of our new buildings, Taupe and Matawara. It was an awesome showcase of all the effort put into these buildings and the great results and quality of the buildings we now have.
Our guests were representatives from the Ministry of Education, Citycare Property, Tuahiwi Marae, the school board and local primary and intermediate schools. We began with a Mihi Whakatau from our fantastic Kapa Haka group. The Kapa Haka group featured a few times during the ceremony with stunning waiata. The official opening was conducted by Hon. Dr Megan Woods, Member of Parliament for Wigram and family members of the late Mark Callaghan, (previous presiding member of our school board).
After the returning of the sod, which signifies the closing of the building programme, the ribbon was cut by members of the Callaghan family and Dr. Megan Woods, and the commemorative plaques were unveiled. A truly heartwarming moment. Then we finished off with words from Peter Dooley, a member of the Board of Trustees. After the ceremony was over, we all shared kai in the new space. The cake tasted about as brilliant as the whole ceremony had gone. Before we returned to our classes members of the student leadership team were able to take some of the guests on a tour around the new buildings. All and all, this was a brilliant experience and a pleasure to be a part of.
