Learning Overview

Christchurch South Karamata Intermediate School delivers a varied and stimulating curriculum, designed to engage and extend learners in all aspects of the NZ curriculum. Our vision and values along with the key competencies underpin all aspects of the South Curriculum.

English, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Health are delivered in homerooms where most aspects of these curriculums are integrated into school wide themes, using South’s Deep Learning approach. This aims to develop students’ knowledge, skills, competencies and thinking strategies through a range of experiences and topics and through effective use of digital technologies and connections with the community.

The school Mathematics programme emphasizes knowledge acquisition across all Mathematical areas along with development of advanced Numeracy strategies. Flexible grouping is used to support meeting the students’ learning needs.

Homeroom teachers also deliver programmes of learning for Physical Education, Te Reo Māori and a taste of foreign languages. The expertise, strengths and interests teachers have in these areas are used by teams to support rich learning programmes. This is sometimes referred to as semi-specialisation.

Our specialist programme involves the development of practical skills, creativity, critical thinking and a sense of wonder through:
  • Product Design Technology (digital technology and hard materials),
  • Food Technology
  • Visual Arts
  • Performing Arts
  • Science

The teachers of these programmes are specialists which allows them to focus solely on these subjects using their expertise and specific training.

In addition to these core subject areas the school offers a wide variety of extra-curricular opportunities. These can be accessed at various times during the school year and include sporting, cultural, musical, artistic and performance opportunities. Students and parents are encouraged to keep checking the daily notices for information.
