Our Girls' Cricket team represented the school brilliantly at the CJCA Christchurch Year 7 & 8 Cricket final against Heaton Intermediate. While they lost the game they never gave up and put up a really competitive fight.

Sophie was carrying an injury so was happy to remain at school and the difficult decision was made that Noa would be our travelling reserve (She was a terrific support for the team although a knock to the head while giving throw downs was not a part of the plan!)

Heaton batted first and scored a very competitive 154 for 6. At one point it was looking like they could've reached 170-180 so the South girls did very well to pull that back. Zoe took 2 for 36, Izzy 2 for 14 and Darcy 1 for 14.

The South girls reached 122 for 4 in their 20 overs with Darcy (21) and Izzy (22) putting on a strong 69 for the first wicket and Maia contributing 21 not out at the end. There was some excellent running between the wickets right through the innings.

Second place is an excellent result and while it was not what the girls were looking for they are not out of contention for a place at the National finals yet. Our understanding is that they will now have a game against the Mid Canterbury finalist for a place in the top of the South Island finals where the winner will meet Heaton, a country team and a team from Nelson to determine who goes off to the National final.

Many thanks to all the parents who came to support the girls and especially to Mike and Nathan for their scoring and umpiring support and to Nick McBreaty and Jacinta Burton for their organisation of the girls' cricket (unfortunately not able to be there yesterday) and to Maria Lankeswar for her additional coaching in the lead up to the game and her support of both teams yesterday.
