On Monday 7th December, the CSKI Korfball squad travelled to Hagley Park to take part in the final Year 7/8 korfball tournament for 2020. South had 3 teams take part in the hotly contested tournament - our undefeated A team, a year 8 'leavers' team, and a year 7 'development' team.
Our year 7 team showed wonderful growth and improvement throughout the tournament. Coming up against much more experienced opposition, they showcased some excellent skill and team play. They built strongly on their success through pool play and eventually found themselves matched up against our A team in the quarter final. While they made the A team work hard, they were unable to take them down, eventually losing the quarter final 5-0. This team was well coached and supported by ex South student Sophie Yarham.
Our year 8 'leavers' team were able to use their experience and team cohesion to fly through pool play. They played an exciting style of korfball and produced some outstanding results. After winning a tight quarter final, they found themselves matched up against Kirkwood in the semi final with the winner destined to face our A team in the final. After 20 minutes the scores remained level which meant we were in store for a sudden death penalty shootout! Unfortunately, the bounce of the ball did not go our way and Kirkwood advanced to the final.
Our A team has not lost a game since term 1 in 2019 and were keen to maintain their undefeated streak. After blitzing through pool play. We faced off against Kirkwood in the final - a repeat of the term 2 tournament. Our skill level and strength proved to be too strong and we came away as 7-0 victors!
Well done to all members of the korfball squad for a successful 2020 season. Rain, hail or shine, all members of the squad are at training every Thursday morning prepared to learn and further develop their skills. To the year 8 students, good luck with all your future endeavours. To the year 7's, see you next year!
