Last Wednesday, 23rd August, our two school rock bands travelled to Rangiora to compete in the regional heat of Bandquest.  'Better Than Nothing' (nee Monday Morning Rock Band) and 'Manaja' (nee Tuesday Morning Rock Band) each performed a two-song set to a friendly, supportive audience of friends and family. We had tough competition from 10 local schools including Breens Intermediate, Thorrington Primary and Christchurch School of Rock. The MC made it a really fun night, with mini-competitions and even free shoulder massages!
Once again, Christchurch South Intermediate School excelled and achieved outstanding results:
Manaja - first place, winning $400 for the school music department
Better Than Nothing - third place, winning $100 for the school music department
William Mannering - Rockin' Drummer Award
Manaja now go through to the national finals and have been set the task of creating a video of them performing a two-song set.  The video will then be submitted to the judges later this year.  Some of the judges' comments about Manaja included:
"Captivating, a super tight performance, fantastic vocals, rockin' drummer, heaps of energy and a well thought out arrangement."
Better Than Nothing also captured the judges' attention with comments including:
"Really mature and musical performance, you have a strong sense of sound and style, awesome strong stage presence as a group, you have a natural groove, beautiful vocals and harmonies, awesome guitar solos, well arranged songs."
A huge thank you and well done to Matt Stevenson, who ably leads the group and arranges the songs.
Keen to hear more?  Both bands will be performing in our forthcoming Showcase - The Amazing Race, which is on 12, 13, 14 September.
