This year's Otago Daily Times EXTRA Spelling Quiz once again saw six South teams battling it out with 60 other Year 7 and 8 teams from around Canterbury to be this year's spelling champions. As the defending champions from last year hopes were high of a repeat performance as teams began the first round. Each team's spelling ability was well and truly tested as was their knowledge of homonyms, abbreviations, and the geographic origins of words, as well as their dictionary and proof reading skills.
This competition gets tougher every year as teams from around Canterbury vie for the title of Spelling Champion. An indication of the strength of competition this year was that six teams tied for first place with a 'spell off' required to decide the eventual winner. This year's top South team finished with a very creditable score of 95 out of a possible 100 points, only 2 points behind the winning team. Three other teams also finished the evening with scores in the 90s with the remaining two teams not far behind. Once again, a very successful evening for South's students.
